MR Spoons 2015

A brief history of the spoons

We get asked all the time how we met and how we got our name, I hope that this explains who we are and what we do.

Back in the late 80's we used to go sailing at Rutland Water. Where we were part of the 'boating group' which in turn was a part of the 'camping club'. There were over 200 units (tents / caravans) all enjoyed the facilities and the sailing. Until 1990 when the Commodore at the sailing club changed (for the worse). One sunny windless day a few of us decided to go for a bike ride around the reservoir, we arranged to meet in front of the clubhouse. We all gather in front of the clubhouse, when out pops Mr commodore. "it's no cycling in the club", "Ok" those who were on there bikes got off. We walked our bikes to the gates and went on our ride.

When we came back to the gates of the club we got off our bikes and walked them to the front of the club house, when out popped Mr Commodore " I've told you lot, no cycling!", " I'm sorry but we are not cycling, we'er walking ", " It says at the gate NO WALKING!", "It does not say anything about not hopping". At this point we started hopped our bikes to the gates... I have never seen anyone go red from the bottom up. Mr Commodore then vented his anger on the Commodore of the boating group. In turn myself, and Neil-a-spoon where sat down with the Commodore and told to stop winding him up.

The following year mister happy Commodore had put some conditions on the boating group, such as the wearing of an arm band, to distinguish yourself between and the 'club' members and the boating group. This was one step too far for a lot of the boating group and 'us'. All this, almost put the 'club' out of business, as in the hay day we ran the regatta, manned the rescue boats, ran the bar, ran the kitchen and all the evening entertainment!

We then arrange to go to Keswick where we had the hottest weather recorded on the spoons. The name is taken from the 'Steve Wright' radio show in the 80's.

Where we are now. Everyone is welcome it is more family orientated now during the day with walks, bike rides, sports days or just lazing around. But in the evening it's 'party' time the 'boy's' have a bar as shown above. The bar always has the local brew ONLY REAL ALE which is the hand pumped to produce a fantastic pint! The Girlies have 'snoops cocktail bar' but we all meet in the party tent and play games, quizzes, eat curries or just chat.
